One day, and you want to stand in the swirling sands of Hill Inlet, swim at Whitehaven Beach and see some reef. We compared the day trips that leave Airlie Beach and picked the right one for each kind of day.

Nearly every Whitsunday day tour from Airlie Beach sells the same picture: the white swirls of Hill Inlet and the long silica sand of Whitehaven Beach. Read the details, though, and the days are very different. Some boats skip Hill Inlet entirely, some only reach it when the tide allows, and some spend more of the day on the way than on the sand.
The other big choice is reef or beach. Whitehaven sits in the islands, the outer Great Barrier Reef lies much further out, and only one of the day tours we compared does both. Families with toddlers, non-swimmers, snorkellers and couples who want a glass of sparkling on the way home all need a different boat.
We went through each operator's own pages for these seven trips: fares, times, where the boat really goes, what is included and the cancellation rules. Where something is not published, we tell you.
How we compared these tours: every price comes from the operator's own website, checked on 9 October 2026. Cruise Whitsundays (Camira, Reefworld and the half-day cruise) prices by demand and season, so its fares are from prices and can be higher on busy dates. Watch what is included: Thundercat, Viper and Lady Enid include transfers from local accommodation, Cruise Whitsundays charges $13 per adult for a coach, and Ocean Rafting sells drinks and snacks on board.
Thundercat, Red Cat Adventures
The most complete package: transfers, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, BYO with an esky, about two hours on Whitehaven and two snorkel sites, 9am to 5pm.
Ranked by our rating. Every fare is what the operator publishes, and each card links straight to the full review.
Ocean Rafting, Northern Exposure or Southern Lights
Small, fast boats for a maximum of 32 guests, with direct access to the beaches of Hill Inlet. Northern Exposure for two snorkel sites, Southern Lights for more beach time.
Viper, Iconic Whitsunday Adventures
Hill Inlet, Whitehaven Beach and a snorkel at Bait Reef on the outer reef in one day, with hotel pickup and lunch included. Strong swimmers only.
Lady Enid, Iconic Whitsunday Adventures
An adults-only day on a restored 1960s timber yacht: Hill Inlet, Whitehaven, Betty's Beach, a snorkel and sparkling on the sail home. Pickup included.
Camira, Cruise Whitsundays
A full day under sail on a big catamaran, with BBQ lunch and beer, wine and cider from 10am included. Hill Inlet depends on the tide.
Reefworld, Cruise Whitsundays
Four hours at a pontoon on Hardy Reef, with an underwater observatory and a semi-submarine so everyone sees the coral. The reef day for non-swimmers and families.
Whitehaven Morning or Afternoon Cruise, Cruise Whitsundays
The cheapest way to Whitehaven: up to two hours on the southern end, morning or afternoon, from $139. No Hill Inlet and no snorkel.

Adult and child fares as published by the operator. Cruise Whitsundays fares are from prices and change with demand. Child ages differ: Ocean Rafting and Thundercat 2 to 14, Cruise Whitsundays 4 to 14, Viper 8 to 14 and at least 130cm. Ocean Rafting is $10 per person more from Daydream Island. Viper and Lady Enid add $20 per person on public holidays.
Hill Inlet is the photo, so make sure your boat goes there. Ocean Rafting, Thundercat, Viper and Lady Enid all include the walk to the lookout. Camira goes when the tide allows, and visits the southern end of Whitehaven instead when it does not. The half-day cruise does not visit Hill Inlet at all.
For snorkelling, Ocean Rafting's Northern Exposure and Thundercat both visit two fringing reef sites. For the outer reef, Reefworld spends four hours at a pontoon on Hardy Reef. Viper is the one day trip that combines the outer reef at Bait Reef with Hill Inlet and Whitehaven.
The fast boats get you more time at the stops. Ocean Rafting travels at up to 30 knots in open boats, which is thrilling but not suitable with back, neck or hip problems or during pregnancy. If you would rather relax, Camira and Lady Enid sail, with lunch and drinks part of the day.
Tours run all year. Stinger season runs roughly November to May, when a stinger suit is worth wearing, and most boats provide one. Prosail notes that the wet season normally runs from December to May, with frequent rain and humidity. From June to October, Ocean Rafting lists humpback whale sightings as part of the day.
The headline fare is not the whole story. Thundercat, Viper and Lady Enid include transfers from local accommodation, Thundercat lets you bring your own drinks, and Camira includes beer, wine and cider. Cruise Whitsundays adds $13 per adult for its coach, and its fares can rise on busy dates.
Thundercat: Hill Inlet, about two hours on Whitehaven and two snorkel sites, with transfers and food included.
Ocean Rafting lands on the beaches of Hill Inlet itself, with 32 guests at most.
Reefworld: an underwater observatory and a semi-submarine at Hardy Reef.
The half-day cruise: children $55, infants free. Or Thundercat from age 2 with transfers included.
Lady Enid: adults only, a heritage yacht and sparkling on the way home.
Viper: the outer reef and Whitehaven in one day.
What travellers ask us most before booking.
For most people, Thundercat: a full day from 9am to about 5pm with the walk to Hill Inlet Lookout, around two hours on Whitehaven Beach and two snorkel sites, with transfers and food included. If landing on the beach at Hill Inlet itself matters most, choose Ocean Rafting.
In our comparison, adult fares run from $139 for the Cruise Whitsundays half-day cruise to $333 for Viper. Full days with Hill Inlet and snorkelling cost $235 to $295.
Ocean Rafting, Thundercat, Viper and Lady Enid all do. Camira goes when the tide allows. The Cruise Whitsundays half-day cruise does not visit Hill Inlet.
Yes. Reefworld spends about four hours at a pontoon on Hardy Reef, and Viper snorkels Bait Reef on the outer reef as well as visiting Whitehaven. The other day trips snorkel the fringing reefs around the islands.
Reefworld. Its underwater observatory and semi-submarine show you the coral without getting wet. On the beach days, snorkelling is optional on most boats.
Thundercat includes transfers from selected local accommodation, and Viper and Lady Enid include pickup from local hotels. Cruise Whitsundays charges $13 per adult and $7 per child for a coach.
Many are. Ocean Rafting takes most ages from 6 months and Thundercat from 2. Camira is not suitable for infants, Viper needs everyone to be 130cm, and Lady Enid is 18+.
In school holidays and the dry season it pays to book a few days ahead. We confirm availability for your date before you pay.
Thundercat, Viper and Lady Enid are free to cancel until 24 hours before. Cruise Whitsundays charges 100% within 48 hours. We confirm the rule for Ocean Rafting when you book.
Roughly November to May. Most operators provide stinger suits, and several include them in the fare.
We live in Cairns and we book these tours every week. These are the guides we send guests before they choose.
