Far North Queensland's rivers and coast are made for getting wet. Adventures run year-round, but the season shapes the experience. Here's how to time it.
A tandem skydive over the reef coast is the biggest single hit, landing right in Cairns from 15,000 feet. If heights are your thing but you'd rather stay tethered, Australia's only bungy and the 45 m Giant Swing at Skypark deliver the same rush for less.
The Tully River is the region's classic white-water day, Grade 3–4 rapids through rainforest. For something calmer, canyoning in Behana Gorge mixes abseiling and rock slides with swimming, and a Palm Cove sea kayak is the gentlest way onto the water from $77.
Ziplining in the Daintree runs from age 4, the Behana canyoning tour from age 8, and the Cape Trib beach horse ride is a walk-pace introduction suitable for beginners.
A dawn hot air balloon flight over the Tablelands is the most serene experience on this list, and the self-drive option is just $390 through June and July.
Most travellers pair one big adventure with the region's other icons. A skydive or bungy slots neatly around a Great Barrier Reef day; rafting or canyoning pairs well with a rainforest or Kuranda trip; and a dawn balloon flight is an easy add-on before an afternoon tour.
