The honest answer depends on your schedule, not on the reef. Both formats reach real Great Barrier Reef. Here is what changes when you halve the day.

How much reef time do you give up?

A full day gives you three to four hours at the reef across two or three sites. The half-days give you between ninety minutes and just over two hours at a single site. Pure Snorkelling is the longest at over two hours, Tusa is up to two, Reef Adventures about ninety minutes. For a first snorkel that is plenty. For divers or anyone who wants to drift several reef systems, take the full day.

Morning or afternoon?

Only one half-day sails in the morning: Tusa, at 9am, back by 2pm. Pure Snorkelling leaves at midday and returns at five. Mornings are usually calmer, because the sea breeze builds through the day in the dry season. Afternoons suit a morning arrival or a slow start.

Does a half day save you money?

On the outer reef, yes. Reef Adventures is $179 against $275 and up for a full day. On the islands, no. Big Cat and Fitzroy Island Adventures charge the same fare either way, so the short version buys you nothing but a shorter day.

Which half day suits kids?

What if you get seasick?

The crossings run from 45 minutes to ninety minutes each way, all on open water. Morning departures are usually flatter. Take medication at least half an hour before boarding, sit low and central, and keep your eyes on the horizon. If motion is a real problem, the island trips give you solid ground once you arrive.

Can you fit a reef trip around a flight or a cruise day?

This is exactly what the half-days are for. Tusa is back at 2pm and Pure Snorkelling at 5pm, so most schedules fit one of them. Build in a buffer, because boats come back on the sea's schedule rather than yours.

Do the pontoons run half days?
