45 minutes from Cairns, a national park island with fringing reef you can walk straight into, a turtle rehab centre, rainforest trails, and the cheapest full-day island tour in the region. Here's what to expect.
Fitzroy Island is the island most people choose after they've done some research. It's 29 km southeast of Cairns — the same distance as Green Island, roughly the same travel time — but it's a completely different experience. National park island, rainforest interior, multiple snorkel spots you can walk straight into from the beach, a summit trail with views back to the mainland, and a turtle rehabilitation centre that most visitors consider the highlight of their trip.
The price point makes it even harder to argue against: at $108 adult for a full day with Fitzroy Island Adventures, it's the cheapest full-day island tour operating out of Cairns. Green Island's base ferry-only price runs higher for less island access. The tradeoff is that snorkeling gear isn't included in the base price — you'll pay $34 extra — but even with snorkel hire added, the total is lower than most alternatives.
The island isn't perfect. The snorkel zone is fringing reef, which means the coral quality is decent but not outer reef standard. Nudey Beach — the island's famous photo-worthy beach — is made of crushed coral, not sand, which surprises many visitors. And if you're travelling with very young children who can't snorkel or hike, the activity list skews toward active participation. But for active travellers, couples, solo hikers, and families who want real engagement rather than a resort day, Fitzroy is the strongest all-round option from Cairns.
About Nudey Beach: Nudey Beach was named Australia's #1 beach in 2018 by beach expert Brad Farmer. It's genuinely beautiful — bright white, photogenic, surrounded by clear water. It's not sand though. It's crushed coral fragments, which looks stunning in photos but feels different underfoot. Worth the 15-minute walk from the main beach. Just know what you're walking on before you get there.
Fitzroy Island has a significant advantage over every other island from Cairns: you don't need a boat to snorkel. The fringing reef at Welcome Bay starts just metres from the beach. Wade in, put your face underwater, and you're on the reef. This makes snorkeling genuinely accessible — for beginners especially, the removal of the "getting out to the reef" step removes a lot of anxiety from the process.
Welcome Bay is the main snorkel area — sheltered, calm, accessible year-round. Nudey Beach (a 15-minute walk from the main beach) is the better snorkel spot: the fringing reef is healthier, there are fewer people, and the water is consistently clearer. If you're serious about snorkeling, that's where you want to be.
The reef at Fitzroy is inner/fringing reef — not outer reef. You'll see healthy coral in patches, good fish diversity including wrasse, parrotfish, reef fish in numbers, the occasional turtle, and some decent coral structures. It's not Michaelmas Cay, but it's significantly better than the main snorkel zone at Green Island on a typical day, largely because it's less crowded and you access it at your own pace.
The Snorkel Safari (add-on, $85 adult) is worth it if you want the most out of the water time — a marine biologist guides you through both snorkel zones over 50 minutes and identifies species as you go. The Snorkel Experience Tour ($75) is a better option for first-time snorkelers: 35 minutes, introductory pace, guided through the basics.
Gear tip: Snorkel gear is not included in the Fitzroy Island Adventures base price ($108). Hire is $34 adult. If you have your own mask and fins, bring them — the hire gear is serviceable but your own kit is more comfortable. Sunlover's $166 Best of Island package includes snorkel gear and a glassbottom boat tour.
Fitzroy has more activities per square kilometre than any other island you can visit from Cairns. Here's the full breakdown:
The standout reason to visit Fitzroy for many people. The Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre operates on the island — visitors can observe rescued sea turtles during their recovery and learn about the rehabilitation process. It's an emotional experience, particularly for children. Admission is not included in tour prices — budget for this separately. Sunlover sells a Turtle Talk presentation as an add-on ($23).
Both snorkel zones are walk-in from the beach. No tender boat required. Welcome Bay is the sheltered beginner zone; Nudey Beach is the better reef, reached by a 15-minute coastal trail.
The hike to the island's summit takes about 45 minutes return and rewards with panoramic views back to the Cairns mainland across the Coral Sea. Steep in sections and exposed — go early before the heat builds. The views from the top are the best on any island accessible from Cairns.
Multiple national park trails wind through the island's rainforest interior. They're well-marked, varied in difficulty, and almost always quiet. A good option for the early morning before the snorkel zone fills up.
Available on the island (hire separately — prices not included in tour packages). Kayaking along the island's coastline to Nudey Beach is one of the best ways to see the reef from above and access quieter sections of the fringing reef.
Available as an add-on through both operators ($34 with Fitzroy Adventures, included in Sunlover's higher packages). Covers the Welcome Bay reef area and is a good option for non-swimmers or those who want an overview before deciding whether to get in the water.
Fitzroy Island Adventures holds Advanced ECO Certification from Ecotourism Australia — the highest level of sustainable tourism recognition. If environmental impact matters in your booking decisions, this is the most credentialled island operator from Cairns.
Suggested order for the day: Summit hike → turtle rehab → snorkel Nudey Beach → Welcome Bay last. Most people do it backwards — snorkel first and hike last in the midday heat. On the 8:30am boat, you can reach the summit, visit the turtles, and be in the water at Nudey Beach before the 10:45am arrivals have even docked.
Two operators run scheduled day trips to Fitzroy Island. They use the same island infrastructure but have different price structures and what's included.

Best Value
Fitzroy Island Adventures is the island's dedicated operator — the only one that runs exclusively to Fitzroy. Their base price of $108 covers the ferry return and up to 6 hours on the island, with no fuel levy. Snorkel gear and activities are add-ons, which means you only pay for what you use.
Best All-Inclusive Package
Sunlover makes Fitzroy Island easy: you pay one price, and snorkel gear, lunch and a glass-bottom boat tour are sorted. Their Best of Island package ($166/adult) is currently the same price as the Value Package until September 2026, making it genuinely excellent value. Departs at 10:15am — a more relaxed start time than Fitzroy Island Adventures, and returns to Cairns at 4:30pm.
Big Cat also runs the Two Island Explorer — Fitzroy Island + Green Island in one day for $196 adult ($98 child). Departs 8:30am, spends 2.5 hours at Fitzroy then transfers to Green Island for 3.5 hours. One of the best-value days from Cairns if you want to see both.
Fitzroy Island delivers more per dollar than any other island day trip from Cairns. It's the kind of place that works for a wide range of people: solo hikers, snorkeling couples, budget travellers, families with older kids. The one group it doesn't work perfectly for is families with very young children who can't yet participate in active water or land activities — for them, Green Island's resort-style setup is more forgiving.
Green Island is better for non-swimmers and very young children. Frankland Islands is the pick for serious snorkelers who want uncrowded, pristine fringing reef. Michaelmas Cay is the outer reef upgrade if you want to go further out.
Both operators depart from the Reef Fleet Terminal at 1 Spence Street, Cairns — a 5-minute walk from the CBD. Fitzroy Island Adventures departs at 8:30am and 10:45am. Sunlover departs at 10:15am. Book in advance during July–August peak season — the 8:30am boat fills quickly.
Reef-safe sunscreen (standard sunscreen is not permitted on the reef), a rash vest or stinger suit November through May, water shoes or reef shoes (helpful for both Nudey Beach's crushed coral and rocky reef entry points), snorkel gear if you own it, lunch or snacks, and cash for the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre admission and any on-island extras.
June to September is dry season — lower humidity, calmer sea conditions, better underwater visibility. July and August are the busiest months (Australian school holidays). May, June, and October offer a good balance of quiet conditions and reasonable weather. Avoid visiting after significant rainfall, which reduces reef visibility.
Very much so, with the right expectations. The Turtle Rehabilitation Centre is a highlight for kids, the glassbottom boat is good for non-swimmers, and Fitzroy Island Adventures' family price ($278) covers two adults and two children. For families with children under 4 who aren't yet confident swimmers, the snorkeling focus of the day may require more planning — contact the operator directly to discuss options.
The 45-minute crossing is similar to Green Island. In calm conditions it's a smooth ride; in chop, catamarans can rock. If you're prone to motion sickness, take medication before you board — the return trip in the late afternoon sometimes catches a rougher sea state than the morning departure.
