Pure Snorkelling Review 2026

Pure Snorkelling fixes the one thing that bothers me about half-day reef trips: the water time. Most short trips give you ninety minutes at a site. This one gives you over two hours, because the boat is quick and the schedule is built around swimming rather than sightseeing.

It leaves Marlin Marina at midday and is back by five. Before you board there is a marine biologist presentation from 10:30, free, and worth arriving early for. The crew choose one of fifteen reef locations on the day, so where you end up depends on wind and swell rather than a fixed timetable.

At $209 it is the priciest of the Cairns half-days. You are paying for water time and a roomier boat. If you want the cheapest way onto the reef, look at Reef Adventures. If you want the most snorkelling in an afternoon, this is the one.

GuestTours Verdict
The most time in the water of any half-day from Cairns, over two hours at one outer reef site, with prescription masks and wetsuits already in the fare. Midday departure, back by five, from $209 adult and $159 for children 6 to 14.

Pros and cons

What we love
  • Over 2 hours in the water, the most of any Cairns half-day
  • Prescription masks included rather than a hire fee
  • Stinger suits in summer and 5mm wetsuits in winter, both included
  • Marine biologist presentation before you board, at no cost
  • Midday start suits a morning arrival or a slow start
  • Fifteen reef locations to choose from, so conditions rarely spoil it
Worth knowing
  • The most expensive Cairns half-day at $209 per adult
  • Up to 40 guests, more than the smallest operators carry
  • You need to swim 50 yards unaided, so not for nervous swimmers
  • Afternoon snacks only, eat before you board
  • Reef location is chosen on the day, you cannot pick it

Where you snorkel

Pure Snorkelling runs to one of fifteen exclusive reef locations, chosen on the day for wind, swell and visibility. These are the ones they name themselves.

Upolu Reef
Outer reef, north east of Cairns
Outer reef site also used by the other half-day boats. Coral bommies in shallow water, good for a first snorkel.
Moore Reef
Outer reef, south east
The same reef system the pontoons sit on, but visited without a platform or the crowd that comes with it.
Thetford Reef
Outer reef
Part of the group the dive boats work. Steeper coral edges and consistently good fish life.
Sudbury Cay and Reefs
Sand cay with reef around it
A sand cay rather than a straight reef wall, which gives a different feel and easy shallow entry.
Breaking Patches
Closer patch reef
Used when wind makes the outer sites uncomfortable. Still genuine coral, calmer water.
Pretty Patches
Patch reef system
The other sheltered option on breezier days, with shallow coral heads.

Optional extras, worth it?
