Half days are the most underrated way to use Cairns, and they solve three problems at once: an arrival day with an afternoon in it, a departure day with a morning in it, and a week where somebody in the group cannot face another 7am pickup.
The geography helps. The outer reef is close enough to reach and return from in four hours, the range starts 20 minutes out of town, and the islands are 45 minutes by ferry. Here is everything that genuinely works in half a day, with what it costs.
Three reasons, and they are all specific to this coast.
The reef comes close. Upolu Cay and the inner edge of the outer reef are reachable in about 90 minutes, so a boat can leave at noon, give you a couple of hours in the water and be back by four. Most reef destinations in the world cannot do that.
Everything else is stacked vertically. Crystal Cascades is 20 minutes away, Behana Gorge 35, the northern beaches 26 kilometres. You are never far from something worth doing.
The weather is a morning and afternoon proposition. In the wet season, the afternoon storm is a real thing and a morning half day dodges it. In the dry, the wind is often up early and down by lunchtime, which makes an afternoon reef trip the smoother crossing. Half days let you play both.

There are three genuine outer reef half days out of Cairns, which is more than most people realise, and they are aimed at different things.

Reef Adventures at $179 is the entry point and it is a well-judged product: a noon departure from Finger B, about four hours, Upolu Cay, a snorkel guide in the water with you, and free GoPro photos included rather than sold to you afterwards. Ages 6 to 65, which is the one restriction to check. Wetsuit hire is $8 and a prescription mask is $15 if you need one. A family of four is $535.
Pure Snorkelling at $209 is the one to book if the swimming is the point. It runs 12:00pm to 5:00pm and gives you over two hours in the water, which is more than several full-day boats manage once you subtract the crossing and lunch. Small group.
Tusa at $205 is the only outer reef half day that goes in the morning, 9:00am to 2:00pm, to Saxon or Hastings Reef. If your afternoon is already committed, or if you simply do not want to be on the water when the afternoon build-up happens in the wet season, this is the one.

A half day on the outer reef at $179 against a full day from $275 is not a compromise if you are a moderate swimmer. Most people are genuinely finished after two hours in the water, and the second half of a full day is often spent on a bench in a wetsuit.
Both of the main day-tripper islands sell half-day tickets, and the pricing on them is unusual.
Fitzroy Island Adventures is $108 adult and $62 child, and the half day costs the same as the full day. There is no saving in taking it, so the only reason to book the half day is that your afternoon or your morning is committed. Departures at 8:30am or 10:45am, 29 kilometres and a 45 minute ferry. Snorkel gear is $34 extra, which matters when comparing.
Big Cat Green Island is $122 adult and $61 child with departures at 9:00am or 1:00pm, and the fare includes either snorkel gear or the glass bottom boat. Green Island is 27 kilometres offshore, a coral cay with a rainforest interior, and the 1:00pm departure is a genuinely good afternoon.
The distinction that matters: Fitzroy is a granite continental island with hills, walking tracks and a national park. Green Island is a flat coral cay with a resort on it. Our Fitzroy versus Green Island comparison settles it properly.
The ones nobody sells you as half days, because they are free or nearly free.
Rainforest swimming holes on a flat walk with free parking. This is where Cairns itself goes to swim, and it is the best free half day in the region. Unpatrolled, so read the signs.
Palm Cove or Trinity Beach: a netted swimming enclosure in stinger season, lifeguards seven days at both, restaurants on the sand. Sunbus route 110 gets you to Palm Cove in about 53 minutes if you have no car.
A 4,800 square metre filtered saltwater lagoon with lifeguards from 6am to 9pm, plus a market that is worth an hour on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday morning. The default arrival-day half day.
Indoors, in the city, and the aquarium's own suggested visit is two hours. Open 9:30am to 3:30pm with last admission at 2:30pm, which is earlier than people expect. The right answer in heavy rain.
A longer uphill walk on a service road to a reservoir, and a proper piece of exercise rather than a stroll. Good for a morning before the heat.
Technically a half day if you arrive by 10:30am and catch the snake show, the 11am crocodile feeding and the 1pm farm tour. Open 8:30am to 5:00pm daily.
Easy to forget when you are planning around the reef, and all four of these fit into half a day.
Skydiving, $355. Around 90 minutes on the day, free hotel pickup, tandem from up to 15,000 feet, and it lands in Cairns city so your group can watch. Minimum age 12.
Bungy and the giant swing, $269 adult and $179 child. Two activities on one site north of the city, and the best value adrenaline half day here.
Hot air ballooning, $495. Pre-dawn pickup, sunrise over the Tablelands, back in Cairns by mid-morning. Technically a half day, although it is a half day that starts before 4am.
River drift snorkelling, $155 adult and $115 child. Floating down a rainforest river rather than swimming in it, and a much gentler thing than the name suggests. Minimum age 4 outside high flow.

This is the decision that changes the quality of the day, and almost nobody thinks about it before booking.
On the reef, afternoon is often better. The trade wind is frequently strongest in the morning and eases through the day, so a noon departure can be a smoother crossing than an 8am one. Afternoon boats are also quieter, because most people default to the morning. The counter-argument is the wet season afternoon build-up, which is when Tusa's 9am departure earns its money.
On land, morning is better. Waterfalls, gorges and walks are all more comfortable before 11am, and the light on the Tablelands is better early. A 2pm walk up Behana Gorge in February is a poor decision.
For adrenaline, morning. Skydiving and ballooning both run in the morning for weather reasons, and neither should be booked on your last day in case the weather moves it.
Never book anything weather-dependent for your final morning in Cairns. Reef boats cancel for wind, skydives get rescheduled, and balloons need still air. Leave your last morning free and put those in the middle of the week where a rescheduled day has somewhere to go.
Occasionally worth doing, mostly not. The combinations that genuinely work:
Morning reef, afternoon lagoon. Tusa gets you back at 2pm. Swim off the salt water in the free Esplanade Lagoon, then eat on the boardwalk. Easy, and no driving.
Morning Hartley's, afternoon Palm Cove. They are on the same highway. Crocodiles until one, then a netted swim and a late lunch on the sand at Palm Cove on the way home.
Morning skydive, afternoon reef. Only for the genuinely energetic, and only if the skydive is early. Two of the biggest things in the region on one day, which some people love and some regret.
Crystal Cascades then the markets. Both free, both short, both close. The best cheap day in Cairns and a good use of an arrival day when nobody wants to commit to anything.
What does not work: two things that both need a boat, or anything paired with a Tablelands or Daintree drive. Those are full days by definition, and our day trips guide covers them.
