The full review

If you want white water but not a whole day of it, this is the one. The trip fits into an afternoon after a morning by the pool or on the Esplanade.

The river runs through Barron Gorge National Park, and the hydro power station upstream keeps the water at a good level all year. You get a safety briefing and paddling lesson first, then about 2 hours of rapids, drops and calm floating through World Heritage rainforest. Expect to get wet, and expect the guides to make sure of it.

Wear swimmers under your clothes and shoes with a heel strap, because thongs are not allowed. There is almost nowhere to change at the river, so plan to change back at your hotel. Bring a little money if you want drinks or the action photos.

Why it earns Best Half-Day Rafting and a 4.8: real rapids, short travel time and a price that includes the river levy. The catch: it is not the Tully. If you want bigger grade 3 to 4 rapids and a full day, go to the Tully instead.
