Cairns has an adventure industry out of all proportion to its size, and the reason is geography: a mountain range, a rainforest river system and a big flat coastal strip all within half an hour of each other.
The useful thing to know is that most of it runs as a half-day. That makes these the perfect thing to slot between a reef day and a rainforest day, rather than something you sacrifice a whole day for.

Skydiving over Cairns
$355, tandem from 15,000 feet, and the only skydive in Australia where you can see the reef, the rainforest and the coast on the way down.
How it works: pre-dawn or morning pick-up from your accommodation, a briefing, harness fitting, then the flight up. Freefall from 15,000 feet is around 60 seconds before the canopy opens, and the whole thing from pick-up to drop-off is roughly half a day.
The rules that matter: minimum age 12, and this is the one that catches groups — it applies from the transfer bus onwards, so a younger sibling can't come along to watch. Maximum weight 94 kg. Media is charged separately.

Bungy and the giant jungle swing
A 50-metre tower in rainforest about 20 minutes north of Cairns, and the site also runs a giant swing that launches you through the canopy.
Pricing is $269 adult and $179 child, with the two activities on the same site so you can do both. Minimum age 10 and minimum weight 45 kg, and the weight floor stops more bookings than the age does.
The honest comparison with skydiving: bungy is more frightening in the moment and far shorter. Skydiving is a bigger commitment and a longer experience. If you can only do one and money is a factor, the bungy site gives you two activities and change from a skydive. See the bungy and giant swing.
The giant swing is the underrated one. It takes up to three people at once, which makes it the only adrenaline activity here you can do with someone rather than in front of them. For groups and nervous first-timers, it's a better call than the bungy.
White-water rafting on the Tully
The Tully River is the best commercial rafting in Australia and it's $280 for a full day — the only genuinely full-day adrenaline option here.
It's Grade 3–4 water with a minimum age of 13, running through rainforest gorge with a hydro release that keeps the levels reliable. Expect a long drive south, a full day on the water in a raft with a guide, and a bus back that's very quiet.

Canyoning at Behana Gorge
Our own favourite of the lot, and the one most visitors have never heard of.
$279 adult, $199 child, $849 family, about five and a half hours, with five abseils including one of 32 metres down a rainforest gorge, plus jumps and slides into pools between them. Minimum age 8 at Behana, which makes it the most family-accessible serious adventure in the region. The Crystal Cascades course is 12 and up.

The gentler adrenaline
Not everyone wants to be frightened. Two options that deliver the scenery without the fear:
- Hot air ballooning over the Tablelands, $420. Pre-dawn pick-up, sunrise from a balloon over the plateau, back in Cairns by mid-morning. It costs you a lie-in rather than a day. See hot air ballooning.
- River drift snorkelling, $155 adult and $115 child. Floating down the Mossman River in a rainforest gorge with a mask on. Minimum age 4, rising to 15 in high water. Genuinely unlike anything else here. See Back Country Bliss.
- Cape Tribulation ziplining through the rainforest canopy. Grip gloves are compulsory, so budget for those on the day. See Cape Trib ziplining.

These are the hardest rules in the Cairns tour industry, and unlike most things they are not negotiable on the day.

How to fit them into a week
The mistake is treating an adrenaline activity as a day. Almost none of them are.
- Skydiving, bungy, canyoning and river drift are half-days. Put one on the afternoon after a morning reef trip, or the morning before a lazy afternoon.
- Ballooning costs you a sunrise, not a day. You're back by mid-morning, so you can still do something else.
- Only Tully rafting is a genuine full day. Treat it as one of your three or four big days.
- Don't book one the day after a big night. Obvious, and people still do it.

Weather cancels these too. Skydiving and ballooning are the most weather-dependent things in the region — more so than reef boats. If either is a priority, put it early in your trip so there's room to rebook.
