Kuranda Skyrail & Scenic Rail Review 2026: The Classic Way Up the Range

Almost everyone who visits Cairns ends up doing Kuranda, and the reason this particular combo endures is simple: you travel up the range one way and down the other, by the two most scenic routes, so you never repeat the view. It's the one I recommend over any single-mode ticket.

The Kuranda Scenic Railway is the heritage option, a 37-kilometre line built in the 1890s that climbs through 15 hand-cut tunnels and pauses above Barron Falls. The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is the quiet counterpart, gliding 7.5 kilometres just metres above the rainforest canopy with two stops, Red Peak and Barron Falls, where boardwalks let you step into the World-Heritage rainforest. In between, you get a few hours in Kuranda village: heritage markets, riverside walks and wildlife parks if you want them.

At $145.50 it's the cleanest, best-value way to do Kuranda properly. Pick the train up and Skyrail down, or the reverse, the price is the same. Our pick for the best Kuranda day from Cairns.

GuestTours Verdict
The definitive Kuranda day: heritage rail one way, the Skyrail cableway the other, so you see the range from both the valley floor and above the canopy. Best-value way to do Kuranda. Our pick for "Best Kuranda Day."

Common questions

Your choice, and the price is the same either way. Most people take the heritage Scenic Railway up and the Skyrail cableway down (or the reverse) so they experience both and never repeat the view.
Skyrail closes for a scheduled upgrade from 20 July to 18 August 2026, then a modified, reduced-timetable service until 25 October. For travel in that window we arrange the Kuranda Scenic Railway both ways, or rail plus a coach transfer, and confirm the format with you when you book.
Not as standard, the ticket covers the railway and Skyrail. You can self-drive (park at the Smithfield Skyrail terminal) or add a Cairns city / hotel coach transfer, which we'll arrange when you book.
Typically two to three hours, enough for the heritage markets, a riverside walk, lunch and one wildlife park if you choose. The exact time depends on the timetable you select.
Heritage Class (included) is the standard heritage carriage with commentary and a photo stop. Gold Class adds lounge seating, refreshments, a trip guide and a souvenir pack. You can upgrade the rail leg, ask in the booking form.
Yes. Add the Kuranda Wildlife Experience (from $66), a 3-park pass covering Koala Gardens, Birdworld and the Butterfly Sanctuary, and use it during your free time in the village.
Very much so. There's no physical demand, both journeys are seated and scenic, and the village is easy to explore. It's one of the most all-ages-friendly day trips from Cairns.
The combo doesn't have a single published family rate, so we confirm the exact family pricing (2 adults + 2 children) with you when you book, alongside availability.
Yes, year-round. The rainforest is at its most spectacular in the green season and Barron Falls is in full flow after rain, just bring a light rain jacket.
Yes, and it's great value. Our 2-Day Reef & Kuranda combo pairs this Kuranda day with a full day on the outer Great Barrier Reef.
In peak season (June–October and school holidays) the railway and Skyrail sell out, so a few days' notice is wise. We'll confirm availability within an hour of your request.
Free cancellation up to 48 hours before your selected date. Within 48 hours the booking is non-refundable.
