Two and a half hours from Brisbane, 1,700 km by road. Here's how to arrive without wasting your first day.
Cairns is a long way from everywhere, which is part of why it still feels like somewhere. The good news is that it has a full international airport 7 kilometres from the city centre, so the actual arriving is easy.
This covers the practical side: how long the flights are, when fares move, whether driving is ever worth it, and the one scheduling mistake that costs people a reef day.
Cairns Airport is the fourth-busiest airport in Queensland and it's genuinely convenient: one terminal complex, a short taxi to town, and direct flights from every Australian capital city.
It's also unusual in that the airport sits between the city and the northern beaches. If you're staying at Palm Cove or Trinity Beach, you don't pass through Cairns at all — see our northern beaches guide.

Scheduled direct flight times. Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar all operate on the main east-coast routes.
Two practical notes. Brisbane is the hub — if your city doesn't have a direct service, this is almost certainly where you'll connect, and it's a short second leg. And the timetable is front-loaded to the morning, because so much of the traffic is connecting onto tours. Later arrivals are cheaper and fine if you're not doing anything on arrival day.

If you're travelling in peak season, book flights and the good reef boats at the same time. It's the tours that sell out first, not the seats.
Book the flight around the reef, not the other way round. Arrive with a full clear day before your reef trip, and leave a spare day after it in case of wind. That's the difference between seeing the Great Barrier Reef and getting a refund for it.
It's further than people expect. Cairns to Brisbane is roughly 1,700 kilometres up the Bruce Highway — two long days if you push it, and genuinely three if you want to enjoy any of it. Sydney is around 2,400 km, Melbourne around 3,400 km.
Worth driving if: the road trip is the holiday, you have two weeks or more, and you want the Whitsundays, Magnetic Island and Mission Beach on the way. The Queensland coast is a genuinely great drive.
Not worth driving if: you have a week. You'll spend four days of it on the Bruce Highway. Fly, and hire a car in Cairns only if you plan to self-drive to the Tablelands or Cape Tribulation — see the best day trips from Cairns for what needs a car and what doesn't.
If you're driving a campervan up, note that the wet season from January to March brings road closures on the Bruce Highway from flooding, and that's not a theoretical risk.

Don't book a tour on it. Boats leave around 8am, tour pick-ups start earlier, and a delayed flight turns a booking into a write-off.
What a good arrival day looks like: get to your accommodation, walk the Esplanade, swim in the free lagoon, eat on the waterfront, and buy sunscreen and a rash vest if you didn't bring them. If you land in the morning and want something, an afternoon at the lagoon or a drive up to Palm Cove is plenty.

No. You should not fly within 24 hours of scuba diving, so a dive cannot be on your last day in Cairns. Plan diving for the start of your stay, or snorkel instead on your final day.
Australia's biosecurity rules are strict. Declare food, plant material, wooden items and anything that has been in fresh water or mud, including hiking boots and dive gear. Declaring costs a few minutes; failing to declare can cost a great deal more.
Yes, and they dock close to the city centre. If you are on a stopover you effectively have one day, so a half-day reef trip or a Green Island trip is the sensible choice, as both are timed to suit.
