Passions of Paradise Review 2026: Sailing Reef Tour from Cairns
We checked in at the Reef Fleet Terminal just after 7am on a breezy Tuesday in March. Even before the boat left the dock it was clear this wasn't going to feel like a regular tour. Passions is a 25m sailing catamaran, it actually sails to the reef, which sounds like a small thing until you're standing on the upper deck with wind in your face, two hours from Cairns, watching the city disappear. Morning tea arrives: fruit, coffee, and the first briefing from the marine naturalist. Our prescription masks were waiting for us, no charge.
We visited Flynn Reef and Hastings Reef that day. At Flynn, we dropped in and immediately had a school of fusiliers swirling around us, then spotted a white-tipped reef shark resting under a ledge about 5 metres down. The marine naturalist guided the snorkel, pointing out a giant clam, a nudibranch, a cleaning station where cleaner wrasse were working over a coral trout. It's the kind of detail you'd miss without someone who knows where to look. Lunch was a proper chef-prepared spread: cold prawns, tropical fruit, hot dishes. Afternoon tea on the way back, lying on the bow trampoline. Nobody wanted to leave.
The prescription mask was free, the seasonal wetsuit was free, the guided snorkel was free. Certified dive pricing starts at $75 for your first dive, the cheapest of any outer reef operator from Cairns. The Banksia Award for sustainability and the Australian Tourism Award for Adventure Tourism are both legitimate, they're not marketing claims, they're judged by people who know what they're looking at. For the money, nothing else from Cairns comes close.
