Sunlover Reef Cruises Review 2026: Family Reef Tour from Cairns

Sunlover's 10:15am departure already makes it the easiest reef tour from Cairns, no 6am alarm, no racing to the terminal. We met at Reef Fleet Terminal, boarded the catamaran, and were at Moore Reef by around noon. What surprised us was how much there was to do before anyone even thought about snorkelling.

The waterslide is genuinely 30 metres and it genuinely is the only one on the Great Barrier Reef. The glass bottom boat does a proper circuit with a guide who names the fish. The semi-submersible goes below surface level. The underwater observatory has floor-to-ceiling windows. And the enclosed ocean pool means guests who don't want to snorkel in open water can still see the reef up close, no hesitation required. Four hours at the platform, a full tropical buffet lunch, then the return trip. Thirty-five years at Moore Reef. Eco Hall of Fame certified.

The price after the fuel surcharge is $327 adult and $182 child, the highest of the full-day operators. The 4 hours at the reef is also less than most. But for families with children who want activities rather than just snorkelling time, and for nervous snorkellers who want options at every step, Sunlover is the only operator that delivers all of that in one place.

GuestTours Verdict
More activities than any other reef tour from Cairns, including the only 30-metre waterslide on the Great Barrier Reef. Eco Hall of Fame certified. The top choice for families, non-swimmers and anyone who wants a structured day on the water.

Common questions

Yes, the 30m waterslide is included in the base ticket at no extra charge. It's the only waterslide on the Great Barrier Reef and a genuine highlight, particularly for children.
Yes, better than any other reef tour from Cairns. The enclosed ocean pool is calm and enclosed so non-swimmers can snorkel safely. The underwater observatory, glass bottom boat and semi-submersible all let you see the reef without entering open water.
June to October is the most comfortable period: dry season, calmer seas, strong underwater visibility, and temperatures around 25°C. November to May is warmer and wetter, with stinger season running through those months (stinger suits are provided by all operators). Tours run year-round from Cairns. The reef is genuinely good in both seasons; the dry season is just easier for first-timers.
Sunlover adds $10 per adult and $5 per child as a fuel surcharge on top of the base ticket price. Effective prices are $327 adult and $182 child. The family pass effective price is $846.
You walk on the seabed wearing a helmet that keeps air around your head, no need to get your face wet, and no certification required. You're accompanied by an instructor at all times. $149 per person.
Free cancellation if you cancel 48+ hours before departure. Within 48 hours the booking is non-refundable. If the operator cancels due to weather, you receive a full refund or can reschedule.
Sunlover is the only full-day reef tour that departs at 10:15am by design. It's popular with guests who've had long travel days or simply don't want to be up at 6am. The trade-off is 4 hours at the reef rather than 5–6.
Moore Reef, where Sunlover's pontoon is moored, is about 55–60 km from Cairns. The catamaran crossing takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes each way. Once at the pontoon, all activities happen in one place so there's no further boat travel during the day.
Yes, reef sharks are common at outer reef sites. Whitetip and blacktip sharks are not aggressive toward snorkellers and sightings are genuinely exciting. The pontoon's enclosed lagoon provides a calmer snorkelling environment for guests who prefer it.
Yes. The outer reef sites used by Cairns operators — including Moore Reef — are in better health than the widely reported bleaching of coastal areas. Sunlover's Eco Hall of Fame certification reflects a genuine commitment to reef health. The reef is worth visiting now rather than waiting.
Reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, swimwear, and any motion sickness medication if needed. The 75-minute crossing is on open water. Sunlover's pontoon has change rooms on board, so you don't need to arrive already in swimwear. Leave valuables at your hotel and bring a card for add-ons.
