Day-trippers see the reef for a few hours and motor home. Stay on a liveaboard and you get the reef at its best, dawn and dusk dives, calm early-morning water, and the strange thrill of sleeping out at the reef with nothing around you but ocean. Reef Encounter is the most comfortable way to do it from Cairns.

It's a purpose-built reef base rather than a cramped dive boat: private ensuite cabins, chef-prepared meals, sundecks and marine-biologist talks. The shortest trip is 2 days / 1 night, and you choose your level, snorkel only, an introductory dive if you've never dived, or certified diving with up to five dives on the 2-day. Longer 3, 4 and 5-day trips add more dives and reef sites further offshore. You're tendered out from Cairns and transferred onto the vessel, so you maximise time at the reef.

Where it stands right now: the vessel is out of service until further notice, so nobody in Cairns can book it, us included. We've left the review up because it's still the honest picture of the boat, and we'll switch bookings back on the day it sails again. Choose your level (2 Days / 1 Night)

These were the three fare levels on the 2-day trip. We're leaving the structure here so you know how the boat worked, but we're not quoting amounts while it's out of service, whatever it costs when it returns will be set fresh by the operator.

Longer trips (3 days / 2 nights and up to 5 days / 4 nights) added more dives and reef sites. We'll publish current fares again once the vessel is back in service.
