Two premium outer reef sites, picked on the day

Dreamtime visits two outer reef sites in a single day. The crew choose them each morning for the best conditions, from Milln, Flynn, Hastings, Saxon, Norman and Thetford Reefs, so the sites aren't fixed in advance. Water activities start at 10:30am and you have about five hours at the reef in total.

All snorkelling and diving is done from the vessel. The outer reef wall drops to more than 30 metres in places, which is where the dives go.

Optional extras, worth it?

The full review

Dreamtime leaves the Reef Fleet Terminal at 9:00am and is back at 5:00pm, with about five hours at the outer reef. The crossing takes roughly 90 minutes on a fast motor catamaran, and the welcome on board is Indigenous: a reef creation story and cultural guides before anyone gets wet.

In the water you get two reef sites picked each morning from six outer reefs, plus a marine biology talk and fish feeding. Lunch is a hot buffet, and wetsuit or lycra suit hire is free.

From $255 adult ($275 in peak season) it sits at the low end of the full-day boats, with a cultural presentation, marine biologists and three food services in the fare. We'd book it for curious travellers and families who want a story with the reef. Diving is an add-on, so it is a snorkel-first day.

Common questions

Dreamtime combines the reef with Indigenous storytelling. The day starts with an Indigenous welcome and the reef creation story, and cultural guides sit alongside the marine biologists on board. You also get a marine biology presentation and a fish feeding session, and there is no fuel levy.

Yes. Children aged 4 to 14 pay from $160 ($180 in peak season), and infants aged 0 to 3 travel free. Snorkel equipment comes in adult and child sizes, and swim vests are available in most sizes. Children under 16 need adult supervision at all times. The boat is pram-friendly, with ramp access and wide aisles.
Yes. Two adults and two children pay $670 off peak or $730 in peak season, which is less than four individual tickets. The family fare applies to exactly that mix, so other group sizes pay the individual fares.
Yes, as an optional extra with a return coach. From Cairns city accommodation it is $35 adult and $25 child. From the Northern Beaches (Machans, Holloways, Yorkeys Knob, Trinity, Kewarra and Palm Cove) it is $45 adult and $30 child. Or make your own way to the Reef Fleet Terminal by 8:15am.

It depends on you and the day, but the catamaran is fast and stable, and conditions forecast at 15 knots or below are generally smooth. Ginger tablets and Travel-Calm are available on board, and it works best if you take a remedy about 30 minutes before departure.
Sharks live on the reef, and most are shy and harmless. Marine stinger season in Cairns runs from November to May, and protective lycra suits are free on board. Nobody can guarantee what marine life you will see on the day.
It runs all year. Water temperature is around 29°C from December to February, 25°C from March to May, 22°C from June to August and 25°C from September to November. June to October usually brings the calmest seas and best visibility, and the free wetsuit or lycra suit keeps you comfortable in the cooler months.
It currently operates daily, but operating dates and departures can change. If a departure is cancelled for weather, you get a full refund or the option to move to another date.
