Most reef tours from Cairns leave from the same terminal, on similar catamarans, headed to similar reefs. The Evolution is different before you've even cast off. The vessel is 35 metres, a proper superyacht, and from the moment we boarded at Reef Fleet Terminal, the standard felt different. Own way to the terminal, but it's a 10-minute walk from the CBD, and we were underway by 8am.
We visited Norman Reef first. The reef briefing came from crew who clearly knew what they were talking about, not a script read off a clipboard. A spotted eagle ray passed under the hull before we'd even entered the water. Lunch was the BBQ buffet at the reef itself: prawns, fish, and steak served on board while the reef sat right outside the window. The second site brought the semi-submersible and the third dive option. On the return, a glass of wine and afternoon snacks. Prescription masks free if you need them.
Snorkelling is included in the base price; diving is an optional add-on, with your first dive at $90 (from $365 adult in total). Thirty-plus years locally owned, PADI 5-Star rated, eco-certified. Yes. Bleaching events have affected inshore and mid-reef areas more than the outer reef sites used by Cairns operators. The outer reef at Norman Reef remains in good health with strong coral cover and marine life diversity. It's not what it was 40 years ago, but it's one of the most biodiverse marine environments on earth, and worth seeing now rather than waiting.

Own way to Reef Fleet Terminal in Cairns Harbour. No hotel transfer service is included. The terminal is a 10-minute walk from the Cairns CBD, and taxis or rideshares are easy from most hotels. Allow extra time if coming from the Northern Beaches or Palm Cove.
The outer reef is about 60–70 km from Cairns. Down Under's motor yacht takes approximately 75–90 minutes each way. Norman Reef, the primary site, is one of the most accessible outer reef locations from Cairns.
June to October: dry season, calmer seas, excellent visibility, temperatures around 25°C. November to May is warmer with occasional rough weather and stinger season (stinger suits provided). Tours run year-round. Either season is good; dry season is the safer choice for first-timers.
