Down Under Cruise & Dive Review 2026: Superyacht Reef Tour from Cairns

Most reef tours from Cairns leave from the same terminal, on similar catamarans, headed to similar reefs. The Evolution is different before you've even cast off. The vessel is 35 metres, a proper superyacht, and from the moment we boarded at Reef Fleet Terminal, the standard felt different. Own way to the terminal, but it's a 10-minute walk from the CBD, and we were underway by 8am.

We visited Norman Reef first. The reef briefing came from crew who clearly knew what they were talking about, not a script read off a clipboard. A spotted eagle ray passed under the hull before we'd even entered the water. Lunch was the BBQ buffet at the reef itself: prawns, fish, and steak served on board while the reef sat right outside the window. The second site brought the semi-submersible and the third dive option. On the return, a glass of wine and afternoon snacks. Prescription masks free if you need them.

Three dives in the package is more than any non-dive-boat operator from Cairns. Thirty-plus years locally owned, PADI 5-Star rated, eco-certified. It's been named one of the best day cruises in the world. At $275 adult, you're paying the same as Passions, but for a completely different kind of day. If the vessel and the food matter to you as much as the reef itself, this one stands alone.

GuestTours Verdict
Cairns' only superyacht reef tour. Same price as a catamaran but a different experience altogether: better food, wine on the return, and up to 3 dives in the package. The top choice for couples and divers.

Two outer reef sites in one day

Down Under visits two of three rotating outer reef sites, Norman, Saxon or Hastings, depending on conditions that day. Each site is distinct, and five hours in the water across both means you're not rushed.

Rotating Selection (Norman, Saxon, Hastings)
~45–55 km from Cairns · Outer Reef
Two of three sites visited per day, selection based on conditions. Norman is known for coral bommies; Saxon for structure and turtles; Hastings for giant clams and clear water.
5 Hours at the Reef
Two distinct locations
More time at the outer reef than most Cairns day tours. 5 hours in the water across two sites means you're not rushed back to the boat.

Common questions

It's the only 35m superyacht on the Cairns reef circuit. The vessel is significantly larger and more luxurious than a catamaran, full BBQ kitchen, wine service on the return, and the feel of a private yacht rather than a tour boat.
By reef tour standards, yes. BBQ buffet with prawns, fish and steak is genuinely better than the standard tropical buffet you get elsewhere. Wine is also served on the return crossing, no other operator does this.
There are two ways to dive. Add a scuba dive to the standard $275 day for $90 per dive, or book the dedicated diving departure at $365 adult and $260 child, which has your first dive built in. Up to three dives are available either way, and both introductory (no certification needed) and certified options run daily. The dedicated departure is adults 17+, with children from 10 for certified dives and 12 for introductory dives.
Yes, and that's a good sign. Whitetip and blacktip reef sharks are common at outer reef sites and are not aggressive toward snorkellers or divers. Sightings are frequent and genuinely memorable. Larger species like tiger sharks are rare at the sites tour operators use. Down Under's crew briefs guests on what to expect and how to behave around marine life.
Yes. Bleaching events have affected inshore and mid-reef areas more than the outer reef sites used by Cairns operators. The outer reef at Norman Reef remains in good health with strong coral cover and marine life diversity. It's not what it was 40 years ago, but it's one of the most biodiverse marine environments on earth, and worth seeing now rather than waiting.
Free cancellation 48+ hours before departure. Within 48 hours the booking is non-refundable. Weather cancellations receive a full refund or reschedule option.
Yes, children aged 4–16 are welcome. Child tickets cover 4–16 years ($170). Under 4 travel free. Swim vests and flotation aids are on board.
Own way to Reef Fleet Terminal in Cairns Harbour. No hotel transfer service is included. The terminal is a 10-minute walk from the Cairns CBD, and taxis or rideshares are easy from most hotels. Allow extra time if coming from the Northern Beaches or Palm Cove.
The outer reef is about 60–70 km from Cairns. Down Under's motor yacht takes approximately 75–90 minutes each way. Norman Reef, the primary site, is one of the most accessible outer reef locations from Cairns.
June to October: dry season, calmer seas, excellent visibility, temperatures around 25°C. November to May is warmer with occasional rough weather and stinger season (stinger suits provided). Tours run year-round. Either season is good; dry season is the safer choice for first-timers.
Reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, swimwear, and seasickness medication if you're prone. The Evolution is a large stable vessel, but the outer reef crossing is open ocean. Leave valuables at your hotel and bring a card for any add-ons on board.
