Green Island is the easiest good day out of Cairns, and the one we book most for people who want reef and a beach in the same trip without committing to a full outer-reef day.
It's also widely misunderstood. People expect either a deserted sandbar or a theme park, and it's neither.
What Green Island is
A coral cay — an island built by the reef itself, from coral sand and rubble accumulated over thousands of years on top of a reef platform. That's a genuinely different thing from a continental island like Fitzroy, which is a drowned mountain.
Practically that means three things. The island is small and flat, you can walk around it in under an hour. It has living reef immediately offshore, because the island and the reef are the same structure. And it's covered in rainforest, which is unusual for a cay and makes the boardwalk worth doing.
There's a resort, a day-visitor area with a pool, a couple of places to eat, and a jetty. It's developed, but low-rise and mostly hidden in the trees.

How far is Green Island from Cairns?
27 kilometres, and the crossing takes about 45 minutes on a fast catamaran. On a sailing boat it's longer by design.
That distance is the whole appeal. It's far enough offshore for clear water and living coral, and close enough that the crossing doesn't eat your day the way a 90-minute run to the outer reef does. It also means a much gentler ride: if seasickness is a worry in your group, this is a considerably easier trip than the outer reef. Boats leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal in the city, so if you're staying in the CBD you can walk to it. Departures are generally between 8am and 9am, with returns mid-to-late afternoon.
What to do on Green Island
Snorkel off the beach
The main event, and the reason to choose Green Island over a pontoon. You walk in from the sand and there's coral within a short swim. No ladder, no boat, no jumping into open water.
The glass-bottom boat or semi-submersible

The rainforest boardwalk
A short, flat loop through the middle of the island. Twenty minutes, shaded, and genuinely lovely — rainforest on a coral cay is a rare thing.
Walk the perimeter
Under an hour around the whole island at low tide, and the far side is much quieter than the jetty end.
The pool and the day-visitor facilities
Showers, lockers, a pool, food. The reason a family can spend six hours here comfortably.
Add a dive or a guided snorkel
Most operators offer both as add-ons. A guided snorkel with a marine guide is the single best upgrade for anyone unsure in the water.
Snorkelling off the beach — be realistic
This is Green Island's selling point and it deserves an honest description.
What's true: there is living coral within swimming distance of the sand, you don't need a boat, and you can get in and out whenever you like. For a nervous snorkeller or a family, that freedom is worth more than better coral you can only reach by ladder.
What's also true: this is inshore reef, and it isn't the outer reef. Coral cover and visibility are more variable, tides matter, and after heavy rain the water can be murky. If you want the coral you've seen in photographs — bommies, walls, deep blue water — that's an outer reef day, and our reef tour comparison covers those.
The best way to think about it: Green Island is the better day; the outer reef is the better reef. Which matters more depends entirely on who you're travelling with.
Go at high tide if you can. More water over the reef flat means easier swimming and less risk of standing on coral. Ask which departure suits the tide on your date — operators know, and it's not something they volunteer.
How long should you spend on Green Island?

Four to six hours is genuinely enough for a first visit. The island is small, and once you've snorkelled, walked the boardwalk and eaten, you've done it. Anyone telling you it needs two days is selling accommodation.

What to take to Green Island
- Reef-safe sunscreen, and more than you think. You'll be on sand and water all day.
- A rash vest or lycra suit. Operators supply stinger suits free in season, roughly November to May, and that's the only time you need one.
- Reef shoes or old sandals for walking in off the sand.
- Cash or card for extras — add-on dives, the semi-sub on some packages, food if it's not included.
- Your own mask if you have one. Hire gear is fine, but a mask that fits is the difference between a good snorkel and a leaky one.
- A dry bag for your phone.

Staying overnight on Green Island
There's a resort on the island, and this is the version most people don't consider.
The case for it is simple: the day boats leave in the afternoon, and after that a coral cay 27 km offshore belongs to about fifty people. Sunset, stars with no light pollution, and the beach to yourself in the morning before the first catamaran arrives.
