Some reef boats are about the pontoon and the slide. AquaQuest is about getting in the water. It is purpose-built for diving and snorkelling, with a big dive deck and a low platform that makes getting in and out easy.
For first-time divers it is set up well. You get proper tuition at the surface, then dive to 12 metres with no more than four people per instructor. You can do up to three intro dives in one day. Certified divers can buddy up or pay $20 for a guide, and choose full gear or just tanks and weights.
The day runs from 8:00am to 4:30pm from B Finger at the Marlin Marina. Lunch is a hot and cold buffet, with morning and afternoon tea and hot showers on board. Plan a quiet evening, and remember you cannot drive up to the Tablelands straight after diving.
Why it earns Best for First-Time Divers and a 4.6: proper tuition, small instructor groups and a full five hours at the reef, and Libby, a dive instructor herself, recommends them 100%. One thing to know: the $255 snorkel fare does not apply over the Christmas holidays.
We live in Cairns and we book these tours every week. These are the guides we send guests before they choose.
