Drive it yourself

Yes, a normal car makes it to Cape Tribulation

Yes, you can drive yourself to the Daintree, and in a normal hire car. A Daintree self-drive from Cairns is about 140 km each way on sealed road all the way to Cape Tribulation Beach, with one river crossing on a cable ferry. No 4WD needed unless you want to go further than Cape Trib.

What people underestimate is the day itself. The driving alone is two and a half to three hours each way before you stop for anything, and the road north of the river is narrow, winding and shared with cassowaries. Done well, it's one of the great drives in Australia. Done in a rush, it's six hours in a car with a quick look at a beach.

This guide is the version we'd give a friend: the route on a map, the twelve stops that are worth pulling over for, a timetable that works, what the day costs, and an honest look at when a tour is the better deal. Every price comes from the operator or the council, checked in October 2026.

How the day is laid out

One road north. The first 105 km is the coast road and highway to the Daintree River; after the ferry it’s 35 km of narrow, winding rainforest road to Cape Tribulation.

The 12 best stops on a Daintree road trip

In driving order from Cairns. You won’t do all of them properly in a day, so the times tell you what each one is worth. The green number is a detour off the highway.

  1. 1

    Hartley's Crocodile Adventures

42 km from Cairns · about 45 min

The one place on the drive where you're guaranteed to see big saltwater crocodiles: a lagoon cruise where the keepers feed them, the Crocodile Attack Show, cassowaries and koalas. It's a half-day stop, so it doesn't fit in the same day as Cape Trib. The good news: a self-drive ticket is valid for three days in a row, so do it the morning before or on a slower day. Book the Hartley's self-drive ticket with us.

    Cost: $50 adult · $25 childAllow: about 4 hours
  2. 2

    Rex Lookout

    43 km · about 45 min

The first big view of the trip: the coast road swings out over the Coral Sea and you can see the beaches you just drove past. Pull in on the ocean side, stretch your legs, and keep going.

    Cost: FreeAllow: 10 min
  3. 3

    Mowbray River crocodile lookout

    58 km · about 55 min

The bridge everyone talks about, just south of Port Douglas. Saltwater crocodiles live in this river and like to sun themselves on the mudbanks, so locals and visitors have always slowed down here to look. Don't stop on the highway bridge itself: the council strictly prohibits it and it's dangerous. Use the free car park beside the bridge and walk to the lookout. Come at low tide, when the mudbanks are out. A sighting is never guaranteed.

    Cost: FreeAllow: 15 min
  4. 4

    Port Douglas

    67 km · about 1 hr 10

A short detour off the highway for coffee and a walk on Four Mile Beach. On a day trip I'd keep it short, or save Port Douglas for the drive home when you want a proper dinner. Cairns to Port Douglas has more.

Cost: FreeAllow: 30 min, or skipDetour off the highway
  5. 5

    Mossman Gorge

    79 km · about 1 hr 20

Clear water over granite boulders, and the easiest proper rainforest walk of the day. You park free at the Mossman Gorge Centre and take the shuttle in: there's no footpath on the road, so walking it isn't an option. Shuttles leave every 15 minutes from 8am and the last one back is 4:30pm. Look, don't swim: people have died in this river. Our Mossman Gorge guide covers the walks.

    Cost: Shuttle $15.50 adult + $2.70 state feeAllow: 1.5 to 2 hours
  6. 6

    Daintree River Ferry

    105 km · about 1 hr 45

The only way across, and the line between the farmland and the rainforest. The crossing takes about 15 minutes including loading. Keep left for the ticket booth (the right lane is for locals and tour buses). A 1-hour wildlife cruise leaves from the south bank right next to it, from $30, and it's your best chance of a wild crocodile today. Daintree Village, the dashed green line upriver, is a quiet 10 km detour if you have time.

Cost: $57 return per carAllow: 15 min, plus any queue
  7. 7

    Walu Wugirriga lookout

    ferry + 8 km

Also called Mount Alexandra lookout. The road climbs the range and this is where you see what you came for: the mouth of the Daintree River, Snapper Island and the Low Isles, rainforest running down to the reef.

    Cost: FreeAllow: 10 min
  8. 8

    Jindalba boardwalk & Discovery Centre

    ferry + 10 km

Two ways to do the same patch of forest. Jindalba is a free 650 m boardwalk with toilets, about 45 minutes, and it's where tree-kangaroos turn up if you're lucky and quiet. Next door, the Daintree Discovery Centre charges $41 ($19 for kids) and gives you an audio tour and a guide book. If you're short on time, Jindalba first.

Cost: Boardwalk free · Centre $41 adultAllow: 45 min to 2 hours
  9. 9

    Daintree Ice Cream Company

    ferry + 14 km

Ice cream made from the fruit grown on the farm, and the flavours change with what's ripe. The sign is on the left, 14 km past the ferry. Bring cash: card machines up here can drop out when the weather turns.

    Cost: $7.50 for a 4-scoop cupAllow: 20 min
  10. 10

    Madja boardwalk

    ferry + 27 km

A 1.2 km loop where the rainforest turns into mangroves at Noah Creek. It's flat, quiet and labelled, and it's the walk that shows you why scientists get so excited about this forest.

    Cost: FreeAllow: 45 min
  11. 11

    Dubuji boardwalk & Myall Beach

    ferry + 34 km

Another 1.2 km loop, through rainforest and mangroves, with a path down to Myall Beach. The grassy day-use area is the best picnic spot on the drive. You may spot a cassowary, so walk slowly and keep your distance.

    Cost: FreeAllow: 45 min
  12. 12

    Kulki & Cape Tribulation Beach

ferry + 35 km · about 140 km from Cairns

The end of the road for a hire car, and the picture on every postcard. A 600 m boardwalk takes you to a platform over the beach where two World Heritage areas meet. Past here the road turns to dirt and becomes the Bloomfield Track: 4WD only, and off-limits under most hire car terms. Turn around here.

    Cost: FreeAllow: 30 min
Turn around at Cape Trib. Beyond Kulki the road becomes the Bloomfield Track: mostly unsealed, steep, with creek crossings. Parks Queensland says 4WD only, and hire car terms usually ban unsealed roads.

Daintree self-drive cost: what a day really adds up to

The rainforest and the boardwalks are free. The ferry, the river cruise and the car are not. Here’s a typical day for two adults, matching what the Billy Tea and Uncle Brian’s tours include, then a calculator so you can do your own.

Daintree tour or self-drive: which is better value?

On price alone, driving wins as soon as there are two of you, and it wins big with four. A full-day tour costs $239 to $269 per adult. Two people driving spend about $111 each, a car of four closer to $70 each.

But the tour isn’t only transport. Someone else does five-plus hours of driving, much of it narrow and winding, the guide finds the wildlife you’d walk past, lunch and the cruise are sorted, and you’re picked up at your door. If you’re travelling alone, nervous on the left side of the road, or want to actually look out the window, take the tour.

Drive yourself if…

  • There are two or more of you to split the car
  • You want to set your own pace and linger at the beach
  • You’re staying a night in Port Douglas or north of the river
  • You want to add the zipline at Cape Trib

Take a tour if…

  • You’re travelling solo: a tour costs about the same as driving alone
  • You don’t want five-plus hours on narrow, unfamiliar roads
  • You want a guide who knows where the cassowaries and crocs are
  • It’s the wet season and you’d rather not judge the roads yourself

Driving in the Daintree: rules of the road

Eight things that make the difference between a great day and a stressful one.

Your hire car can go

Cape Tribulation is on sealed road, so a normal car is fine. Our car hire partner allows driving north to Cooktown, but not on unsealed roads, beaches, creek crossings or flooded roads. That rules out the Bloomfield Track.

The ferry

$57 return or $35 one way per car, set by the council from 1 July 2026. Pay at the booth or on board by cash or card, or buy online and download the QR code before you lose signal. A return stays valid until 30 June, so you don't have to come back the same day.

Fuel

Fill up in Mossman. North of the river there are only a couple of places to buy fuel, and you don't want to be hunting for one at 4pm.

Cassowaries

They cross the road between the ferry and Cape Trib, often with chicks. Slow down, never feed them, and stay well back if you meet one on foot. They can seriously injure people.

No swimming in creeks

Crocodiles live in the rivers, creeks and estuaries up here, sign or no sign. Be extra careful from September to April, their breeding season. And the sea can carry stingers year-round, more so in the warm months.

Phone signal

Expect very little north of the river. Parks Queensland says you may get reception within about 5 km of Cape Tribulation village and little elsewhere. Download offline maps before you leave Cairns.

Wet season

December to April brings heavy, frequent rain and roads can turn slippery or close. May to September is the easy, drier time to go.

Don't touch the stinging tree

Heart-shaped leaves with serrated edges, often on the rainforest edge. One touch hurts for a long time. Stay on the boardwalks.

Daintree self-drive FAQs

Can you drive to the Daintree from Cairns in a normal car?

Yes. The road is sealed from Cairns to Cape Tribulation Beach, and Parks Queensland says conventional two-wheel-drive cars can do it, although the road north of the ferry is narrow and winding. A 4WD only matters if you want to continue past Cape Trib onto the Bloomfield Track.

How long is the drive from Cairns to Cape Tribulation?

About 140 km each way. Without stops, plan on two and a half to three hours, including the ferry. With the stops in this guide, it's a full day: leave by 7am and you're back in Cairns around 6:30pm.

How much is the Daintree ferry?

$57 return or $35 one way for a car, from 1 July 2026. Motorbikes are $22 return and walkers or cyclists $8. The ferry runs every day from 5am to midnight and the crossing takes about 15 minutes.

Does my hire car insurance cover the Daintree?

On sealed roads, generally yes. Our car hire partner's terms allow driving as far north as Cooktown but prohibit unsealed roads, beaches, creek crossings and flooded roads, so Cape Trib is fine and the Bloomfield Track is not. Other companies have their own rules. When we book your car, we check this for you.

Is it cheaper to drive or take a Daintree tour?

For two or more people, driving is usually cheaper. Two adults doing the ferry and a river cruise come to about $111 each including the car and fuel, against $239 to $269 each for a full-day tour. Solo travellers pay close to tour prices driving alone and lose the guide.

Can you drive into Mossman Gorge?

No. You park at the Mossman Gorge Centre and take the shuttle bus, $15.50 for adults plus a $2.70 state government fee from 18 October 2026. There's no footpath on the road in, so walking it isn't an option.

Can you go past Cape Tribulation in a hire car?

Not really. North of Cape Trib the road becomes the Bloomfield Track: mostly unsealed, steep and with creek crossings. Parks Queensland says it's 4WD only, and most hire car terms ban unsealed roads. Kulki and Cape Tribulation Beach are where you turn around.

Is there phone reception in the Daintree?

Very little. Parks Queensland says you might get reception within about 5 km of Cape Tribulation village, and limited reception elsewhere north of the river. Download offline maps and your ferry QR code before you leave.

Where can I get fuel in the Daintree?

Fill up in Mossman before the ferry. Parks Queensland lists fuel at Cape Tribulation and the Rainforest Village north of the river, but options are few, so don't count on them.

What's the best time of year for a Daintree drive?

May to September: cooler, drier and an average top of 26°C. December to April is the wet season with heavy downpours, slippery roads and the occasional closure. The rainforest is at its most alive then, but you need to be flexible.

Can you do the Daintree as a day trip from Cairns?

Yes, if you start early. Leave Cairns by 7am, be at the ferry before 10am, and turn around at Cape Trib by about 3:45pm. If you want time to swim, zipline or simply slow down, stay a night in Port Douglas or north of the river.

Where can I see a crocodile in the Daintree?

From a boat. A 1-hour Daintree River wildlife cruise leaves from the south bank next to the ferry, from $30. If you want a guaranteed sighting, Hartley's Crocodile Adventures is on the drive north, about 40 minutes from Cairns.
