Free-flight rainforest aviary · Kuranda Heritage Markets
Birdworld Kuranda is one big walk-in rainforest aviary with more than 350 free-flying birds from almost 60 species, including Amazonian macaws, galahs, lorikeets and an endangered cassowary. The birds are used to people, so expect parrots landing close and plenty of photos. It is next door to Koala Gardens in the Kuranda Heritage Markets, and the two share a combination ticket. For keen birders, the 9:30am Bespoke Birdworld tour gets you in with a keeper before the doors open.

Birdworld is the stop in Kuranda that surprises people. From the outside it is a modest entrance in the markets. Inside it is one large rainforest aviary with waterfalls and ponds, and more than 350 birds flying around you.
The macaws steal the show. They are curious and they like shiny things, so take off jewellery and keep your phone in your hand. Children love it. You will also see the cassowary, which is worth knowing if you have not managed to spot one in the wild.
If birds are your thing, book Bespoke Birdworld. At 9:30am, before the public is let in, a keeper takes up to six of you through the aviary for half an hour. You hand-feed the cassowary and give the parrots and lorikeets their breakfast. Kuranda by Design adds a keeper tour at Koala Gardens with a koala patting photo, which makes it a very good small-group morning.
Why Best for Bird Lovers and a 4.5: being surrounded by this many tropical birds is hard to beat, and the early keeper tour is a real treat. On its own it is a 30 to 45 minute visit, so the Friends in the Rainforest ticket with Koala Gardens is usually the smarter buy.
We live in Cairns and we book these tours every week. These are the guides we send guests before they choose.
