The full review

Paronella Park is the place people struggle to describe after a visit. A Catalan migrant built a castle, a ballroom and gardens by hand in the rainforest, and the ruins sit beside a waterfall.

Start with the Dream Continues tour, a 30 minute guided walk that tells José's story and shows you the highlights. Then explore at your own pace: the tropical gardens, the fish feeding and the 1930s hydro-electric generator, which still lights the park.

Stay for the evening if you can. The night experience is in the same ticket, with floodlighting and a sound and light show, but you must book it. The ticket also gives you a free night in the van park and stays valid for 24 months. There is a café on the deck and a pub 300 metres up the road.

Why it earns Best Heritage Attraction and a 4.7: a remarkable story, day and night in one ticket, and good value for a family. The catch: you need a car, and the park has 47 steps between its two levels, though a courtesy vehicle is available.
