Full Day Great Barrier Reef Tour · Cairns
Most reef tours from Cairns leave from the same terminal, on similar catamarans, headed to similar reefs. The Evolution is different before you've even cast off. The vessel is 35 metres, a proper superyacht, and from the moment we boarded at Reef Fleet Terminal, the standard felt different. Own way to the terminal, but it's a 10-minute walk from the CBD, and we were underway by 8am.
We visited Norman Reef first. The reef briefing came from crew who clearly knew what they were talking about, not a script read off a clipboard. A spotted eagle ray passed under the hull before we'd even entered the water. Lunch was the BBQ buffet at the reef itself: prawns, fish, and steak served on board while the reef sat right outside the window. The second site brought the semi-submersible and the third dive option. On the return, a glass of wine and afternoon snacks. Prescription masks free if you need them.
Three dives in the package is more than any non-dive-boat operator from Cairns. Thirty-plus years locally owned, PADI 5-Star rated, eco-certified. TripAdvisor has called it one of the best day cruises in the world. At $275 adult, you're paying the same as Passions, but for a completely different kind of day. If the vessel and the food matter to you as much as the reef itself, this one stands alone.
Not included: guided snorkel (available on request), diving (dive package from $365pp), helicopter flight ($440pp), full wetsuit ($10).
Down Under visits two of three rotating outer reef sites, Norman, Saxon or Hastings, depending on conditions that day. Each site is distinct, and five hours in the water across both means you're not rushed.
